Do You Love Someone with an Alcohol, Drug or Gambling Addiction?
“I watched my son die slowly each day over many years. I was afraid to answer the phone, afraid to watch the evening news, afraid to read the newspaper. My family didn't support or embrace me, they blamed me.
If only I’d been a better mother. If only I hadn't worked so hard. If only I’d been more strict with him. If only, if only, if only . . . ”
If you love an alcoholic, drug addict or compulsive gambler, you can can probably relate to the feelings of shame, guilt, fear, and anxiety expressed by the mother above. Addiction is like a tornado destroying everything in its path, including close family relationships and the ties that bind us.
The Sunlight of the Spirit (SOS) helps families and significant others who love a person with the disease of addiction. SOS, a non-profit, non-denominational organization, offers support, education, and respite for families. It is not a program for the addicted person, although the addicted person ultimately benefits from SOS. Our professional staff provides intensive, structured group and individual sessions in one-day educational programs, and week-end residential programs.
The Sunlight of the Spirit serves family members and friends effected by a loved one's substance abuse in Pittsburgh and Southwestern Pennsylvania.
